The Standards are coming!

No, not the British this time, it's The Standards. And we are welcoming them!!! If you've never heard them perform, you are missing out!! Don't despair, they'll be here in Henderson on the 20th, at 7pm, at Freed-Hardeman University Auditorium . Tickets are only $10.00 and children under 3 are free as long as they sit in someone's lap. The concert is a benefit concert to help raise money for a handicap accessible playground in Henderson. What a great cause!

Please come out and enjoy a night of fun and wonderful Christmas music. You can check out the group at www.thestandards.com. I have had the wonderful opportunity to see their concert they do for middle school children and it is one I won't soon forget. Even the Chester County High School students are still talking about how much they enjoyed the high school show. This is a wonderful, down to earth group that actually stayed after the school concerts and talked to each and every student that wanted to meet them. I can't say enough good things about this group. You definitely won't regret coming out on the 20th! Hope to see you all there!

Call Katrina at 607-7933, Heather at 989-5148, or me to get your tickets!

Trash 2 Treasure

OK, so we had 4-H Club meetings at CCMS today. The contest this month was Trash 2 Treasure, which fit in perfectly with what Mrs. Hatch's Science classes were discussing! So Mr. Brian and I were a bit thrown off when we walked into class to see two table tops and the back part of the room covered with a carpet of recycled art!! :)

Mr. Brian ran out of ribbons!! Good thing I was across the pod in Mr. Kirk's class & didn't need what I had brought. :( (I thought I might get to judge at lest one entry!)

Here are just a few pix, I will post more tomorrow. Be sure to join our group on Facebook, you know I'll be posting there too!

On My Own, Writing Checks

Yes, it's me again! I forgot to add that the 7th grade 4-Hers at CCMS also learned how to write checks! And we did learn that it is not OK to keep writing checks as long as we had checks in the checkbook but there had to be money in our bank account to cover those checks!

On My Own

How many time have you though, "As soon as I turn 18, I'm outta here!!" Well, 7th grade 4-Hers at CCMS are getting a chance to put those thoughts into action as we continue with our activity called On My Own. Everyone has taken a personality survey to see what personality type they were dominant in. Then everyone got to choose a career based on their personality. Yesterday and next week we learned the difference between gross and net pay!! Welcome to the real world - Ha! For some of us, learning about all the deductions was a shocker! Federal taxes, state taxes, social security, medicare, 401K, and insurance??? It's a wonder there is ANY money to bring home!

Chester County Photography Contest

OK, as promised. I'm posting the results of the County-wide 4-H photography contest. We have all the first place photos from your class contests, photos in your grade were judged by employees in the Chester County Executives Office for the county contest.

There were four categories: Building, People, Animal, and Landscape. Every 4-H member was able to submit one photo per category. In some categories there were only 1 or 2 entries in the whole grade (usually 7th & 8th grade, so you see only 1 or 2 county winners! Which means ... there were plenty of spots for your entries, we just lacked entries!

All of the photographs will be up on display during our County 4-H Public Speaking contest in January or February 2009. Family & friends will be able to vote for one photo per category that they consider is "Best Of Show". We'll remind everyone as the time gets closer and you'll be able to pick up your actual photos and ribbons that day too!

Mrs. Cole's club at CCMS is busy collecting non-perishable foods for their service project. The officers have been promoting this in their classroom and plan to donate the collected food to the food pantry at the Gleaner's House on Washington Avenue. If you'd like to see some cool sculptures made with canned food click here! This is a great service project for the community, just think how much food we could collect if all the clubs at CCMS participated?!

Another Trash 2 Treasure example ...

Way back before electronic games and batteries were required for most toys, kids made do with what they had around the house!! Imagine that - no Playstations, Xbox, or WIIs! You had to do exactly that - imagine!! So here's an example of such a toy made from a spoon. This spoon puppet wasn't hard to make, I used scraps of yarn and fabric and some markers and glue. It's just another example of a possible Trash 2 Treasure item you could make for your upcoming contest.

Art Club at CCJHS - Color Wheel Assignment

In order to finish the assignment given out today in Art Club, you need to have a good color wheel. You can make one yourself, but I’ve added one here just-in-case…

I will be sending each member your assigned color scheme to color your art work, either through email or a message to your homeroom teacher! I may just post a list to this blog! Ha! Then everyone will know what you’re supposed to be doing!

A COMPLIMENTARY color scheme is when colors are opposite each other on the color wheel.

An ANALAGOUS color scheme is when colors are next to each other on the color wheel.

A TRIAD color scheme is when you use 3 colors that are equally spaced apart from each other on the color wheel.

A DOUBLE COMPLIMENTARY color scheme is when you use 4 colors that are equally spaced apart from each other on the color wheel.

A MONOCHROMATIC color scheme is the use of 1 color only. The overall scheme includes SHADES and TINTS of blue. A SHADE is pure color + black. A TINT is pure color + white.

PRIMARY colors include the basics of red, blue and yellow. We can make all other colors from these three PRIMARY colors!

SECONDARY colors are made when we combine the PRIMARY colors.
Blue + Yellow = Green
Yellow + Red = Orange
Red + Blue = Violet

TERTIARY colors are made when we combine one PRIMARY and one SECONDARY color!
Blue + Yellow = Blue-Green
Yellow + Green = Yellow-Green
Red + Orange = Red-Orange
Yellow + Orange = Yellow-Orange
Red + Violet = Red-Violet
Blue + Violet = Blue-Violet

If you like photography ...

... then you might consider entering the National 4-H Photo Search contest! If your photo is selected then it will appear in the 2011 4-H calendar! Cool, huh?!

Make sure to read through the rules and download an entry form. Your photo has to have been entered in a contest and won an award before you can send it - something to think about for NEXT YEAR'S photo search contest in your club (which we just had in October)!!

Oh yeah, and we will be posting the winning photos for each category (buildings, animals, people, and landscapes) in a few days!

Another Trash 2 Treasure Project

Here is an example of how you can re-use cans. I got the ideas from you! CCMS students use plastic tumblers, Velcro-ed to their desks for pen & pencil holders!

First Example of Trash 2 Treasure

OK 4-Hers, here is an example of a Trash 2 Treasure item. I'll post more examples, so be sure to check back. If you was to submit a photo of your work, contact me!

Are you leadership material?

We will be conducting 4-H Officer training at CCMS, after-school, in October. If you were elected as President, Vice President, or Secretary of your club you will be getting a letter, stating when that training will be.

Please bring something to write with and the Secretary book that we gave to Secretaries during our September meetings. We will give out the 2008-09 4-H Officer Handbooks to each officer who attends and teen volunteer leaders will explain each office and the expectations we have of you.

Getcha 2008-09 Yearbooks!!

Now I am all updated with Adobe Professional 8.0 so I was busy this morning doing some converting and formatting!

I uploaded the 08-09 4-H Yearbook to the Chester County Extension web site. If you misplace (or the dog eats, or your mom throws it out, or your brother uses it to practice origami, etc...) the one we gave to EVERYONE in class, then you can go to the web site and download the yearbook in it's entirety! You can also just print out the page you need or simply add our site to your Favorites folder and print out nothing!!

We sincerely hope by giving out yearbooks and making them available on the web that participation in monthly contests and activities will increase. The rules are all there - as are the dates of the events. Remember to contact us if you ever have any questions!

4-H Judging Day @ West Tennessee State Fair

On Tuesday afternoon Chester County 4-Hers descended on the Jackson Fairgrounds like a swarm of bees! OK - well, not quite a "swarm", but we brought a total of 19 people with us to the 4-H Judging Day at the West Tennessee State Fair. Many thanks to the great adult leaders who chaperoned: Mrs. Sara Beth Hanson, Mrs. Lisa Melton, and Mrs. Denise Jones! :D

Chester County walked away into the midway as winners (was there ever any doubt?) as the CC 4-Hers placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Wildlife Judging competition and 1st and 2nd in the Forestry competition.

Wildlife Teams
1st = Katie Cabrera, Jessica Lindsey, and Ben Melton
2nd = Landon Butler, Cole Lindsey, and Bianca Tunning
3rd = Amber Jones, Kyle Azevedo, and Steven Henson

Kyle was the high scoring individual in Wildlife!

Forestry Teams
1st = Melanie Hanson, Kriste Hatch, and Hailey Hopper
2nd = Ethan Hanson, Jacob Williams, and Brian Barnett

Hailey was the high scoring individual in Forestry!

Jessica Lindsey also got two 1st place ribbons for her photography (which she competed against adults!!) for Flowers and Birds. Her flower photograph was also voted as Best of Show!!

Your prize money, from the fair, should arrive next week. We'll give you a call as soon as it comes to us! Congrats to all & thanks again Mrs. Sara Beth, Mrs. Lisa, & Mrs. Denise!

Wildlife and Forestry Judging

OK - I'm taking fliers out to CCJHS tonight for Open House. Hopefully there will be a morning announcement about this opportunity, so listen for it. You can also download the image above, fill it out, and turn it in to CCJH's front office by Thursday, August 28th. As always, call us if you have any questions!

Your Yearbook is almost complete!

Mr. Brian and I are working on getting the dates correct for camp and "ironing out" a few other details before we post the whole yearbook. We will be printing out copies for every 4-H member in 6th grade & below - we still have not decided what we're going to do for 7-12 grade 4-Hers. Announcements and activity fliers didn't work too well last year. We'll have to get your feedback on the issue.

Wildlife and Forestry Judging are two competitions coming up in September. We'll be meeting in CCJH's library during activity period to train interested participants. We'll start meeting the week of September 2nd (don't forget there's no school on Monday)! The final competition is going to be Tuesday, September 9th, at 4pm, at the West Tennessee State Fair in Jackson. Those eligible to be on a team are 4-Hers who are in 6th & 7th grades.

There will be awards for the first place team ($40), second place team ($30), and third place team ($20)! Wow!! Just think of what you could do with the prize!! 4-Hers competing that day will get free entrance into the fair - and family member or parent volunteer leaders who help us that day!

Welcome to the Chester County Bleed Green Blog, where information about 4-H in Chester County, TN can be posted and discussed. We'll post pictures of various activities and add a calender of events (as soon as I figure out how! LOL!).

We're going to form a Technology Project Group for savvy 4-Hers in CC who will be responsible for helping to keep up this blog and contribute articles about their 4-H related activities.

We don't guarantee spelling or grammar - not so strong in that area - but we will provide a place for promoting CC 4-H and getting you all the information you need to make decisions about our program!
